This ia a picture of Kate Fulk Cooke,my Mother's Mother, and my Grandmother.
She was married to Arthur M. Cooke. She was born 11/22/1866 and died 12/30/57.
Grandma led a hard life and never once did I hear her complain. She outlived her husband by many years and all five of her own children. She was survived by four granddaughters. Two of whom she saw very seldom.
She lived on a farm and when my Mother and Dad got married they lived with her and Dad farmed the farm. She did all the cooking on a wood stove or on a kerosine stove. She was an excellent cook and never measured anything. She also did not teach us how to cook and I don't even remember being in the kitchen when she did the cooking.
Whenever she was sitting she was always crocheting, making rugs from old rags, or making dollies, pillow cases, etc.
We don't want to forget that there was always a huge garden and canning of vegatables and fruit all summer in addition to canning meat.
She also prepared many a meal for all the neighboring farmers who helped each other hay and harvest crops.
She continued to live with Dad and myself after my Mother died. We did move into New Market, Ia. and that was the first indoor plumbing or electricity that she had had.
After Dad remarried she moved in with Betty (my sister) and Ivan. She lived with them for many years and after your Dad and I got married we would have her in Omaha for two or three months at a time. Now you might find this next statement hard to believe, but that is as far as she had ever been from New Market, Ia. She was in a home in Bedford, Ia for a short period and then she returned to Betty's. Her mind was clear and sharp up to the day she died. She had fallen several years before her death and broken a hip and the doctor would not due to surgery because of some health issues and we were told she would never walk again. She proved him wrong and did walk, but we always assisted her.
She was buried on New Year's day, 1958 and your Dad could not bear the thoughts of putting that little old lady in that cold ground and that is the day he decided he would be cremated.
She was a great woman and as I said earlier I never heard her complain or say an evil word to anyone or about anyone.
